President Prabowo Subianto has reiterated the Indonesian government’s careful consideration in negotiating with the United States to reduce import tariffs from 32% to 19%. He emphasized that the main objective of the talks was to protect the interests of the Indonesian people, particularly the nation’s workers. “We have conducted thorough calculations and negotiations. My priority is my people, and I am committed to safeguarding our workers,” Prabowo stated during a press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta.
Despite the challenges faced during the negotiations, Prabowo mentioned that Indonesia maintained a strong stance throughout. “We have made our position clear. This is the best offer we can provide to ensure the protection of our workers,” he emphasized. The president also expressed confidence in Indonesia’s economy, describing it as robust, resilient, and well-equipped to navigate global uncertainties, including trade tensions.
Prabowo described the tariff negotiations with the U.S. as tough but ultimately successful. Both sides reached a mutual understanding after acknowledging each other’s strategic interests. “We have recognized each other’s priorities, leading to a fruitful agreement,” he explained. President Trump also announced a trade agreement with Indonesia, confirming the reduction of tariffs on Indonesian goods to 19%.
Overall, Prabowo emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being of the Indonesian people, particularly workers, in all negotiations and agreements with other countries.
