President Prabowo Subianto has been commended for his wise decision to grant amnesty and abolition to PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto and businessman Tom Lembong, seen as a step towards national reconciliation. The quick and thoughtful response by President Prabowo to address concerns over societal divisions before Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebrations has been praised by senior politician Fahri Hamzah. He noted that House Speaker Prof. Sufmi Dasco Ahmad’s swift reaction showed an understanding of the President’s intention to end social polarization and kickstart a broader reconciliation process leading up to August 17, 2025. Fahri highlighted that President Prabowo’s use of his constitutional prerogative is a positive development, especially in the face of efforts by certain groups to cause disunity. The decision to grant amnesty to 1,116 convicted individuals, including Hasto Kristiyanto, was approved by the Indonesian House of Representatives in accordance with Presidential Letter No. 42/Pres/072725, dated July 30, 2025. Amnesty and abolition are tools available to the President under the Indonesian Constitution to alleviate legal consequences from criminal convictions. It is seen as a genuine effort by President Prabowo to unite the nation and restore societal harmony, amidst attempts to divide the country.
