Indonesia’s Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, has strongly refuted claims suggesting that Indonesia is being used as a “guinea pig” in the development of a tuberculosis (TB) vaccine. He emphasized the critical role of Indonesia in combating this infectious disease, stating that discouraging vaccination could lead to tragic consequences, potentially resulting in the loss of 100,000 lives. Minister Budi pointed out the successful vaccination efforts against COVID-19 and urged media professionals to combat misinformation that might hinder vaccination efforts.
The TB vaccine currently undergoing Phase 3 clinical trials in Indonesia is the product of extensive research conducted by local universities, involving more than 2,000 participants under strict supervision. Minister Budi underscored the significance of adhering to scientific protocols in vaccine development and highlighted the historical importance of vaccines in saving lives. Tuberculosis remains a major global health concern, claiming over one million lives annually, with approximately 125,000 deaths occurring in Indonesia.
By participating in the vaccine trials, Indonesia also aims to enhance its local vaccine production capabilities, potentially becoming a key manufacturing hub. Minister Budi addressed concerns about the vaccine’s suitability for Indonesians, emphasizing the importance of local involvement in the trials. He dispelled rumors regarding the location of a vaccine factory and outlined the government’s strategy to incorporate the TB vaccine into the national immunization program. The Minister concluded by stressing the severity of TB as an infectious disease and the critical role of effective vaccination programs.
